Happy Love Day!
Spawnling decided he would show his love this year by making Valentine's cards for everyone in his class. If I were a first-time mother I would have been jumping for joy. Oh, boy! A craft! This is surely going to be a Pinterest moment! Having been in the game for a while, however, I had some serious reservations. Mainly:
1. he's five and generally has the attention span of a gnat, and,
2. that likely means I'd be up until dawn sprinkling glitter onto heart-shaped cards, and,
3. ... there is no 3. Don't 1 and 2 sound bad enough?
But he surprised me, that boy. He showed incredible dedication to the task. Not only did he make all 24 cards (with a little help from me - mostly in the form of cheerleading) but he insisted that each card be original, and that most contain a picture drawn especially for the intended recipient. It makes my momma heart proud.
Sure, he's quick to yell "Okay, that's it: Sink nails time!" at his brothers and chase them around trying to dig his claws into their flesh (often successfully), but he also has the ability to love, more or less scratching him off the sociopath list. He likes to show me his non-Dexter-driven side more and more these days. He even hugged me over the weekend and told me I was his first love. This wasn't even followed by a request for something.
I now believe in miracles.
Here are pictures of some of my favourite cards. Spawn didn't mind me commemorating his artwork, as he feels it's terribly good and should be immortalized. (Now, if we could only figure out where he gets his ego from...)

This is a cat with a Valentine belly button. It opened up a discussion about mammals, and umbilical cords. I took a moment to educate. Bonus points for me. |
This is a fairy. Don't mess with her. Apparently, all fairies carry a mace now. You can't be too careful. It's hard to camouflage from predators when your body is a giant sparkly flower. |
This is Logan as a heart. I guess the transmutation process from human to heart lends itself to a Grimace-like body. Logan doesn't seem to mind, though. Maybe he's been hanging out with Matthew. |
No, this is not a storyboard for a Tim Burton movie. These are Spawnling's teachers. Spawnling loves them so much that they have hearts for facial features. Creepy, adorable hearts. |
